REMINDER:  Bring your organizational calendars as we will set meeting dates for the 2003-04 school year.   

(Workgroup Team Leaders will meet at 9:00 to organize for the meeting.)

9:30     Welcome and Announcements

  1. Christy Levings will call the meeting to order and welcome representatives from the Kansas Association of School Librarians, the Kansas Parent Information Resource Center—Lecompton, and the Kansas Senior Service Corps Directors.

  2.  Tom Krebs, Sandee Crowther, and Sheryl Spalding will report about the State Affiliates Leadership meeting in Washington, DC in late April. 

  3. Christy will update us about planning with KSDE for the upcoming NCLB Summit this Fall.                 

10:00   Workgroups Meet

Student Achievement:  Deb Larson & Sheryl Spalding, Team Leaders

  • Preview the math study results to be reported to the State Board of Education (Sherrill Martinez).

  • Discuss the impact of the study on professional development needs of math teachers in the state. 

  • What are next steps to take?

  • Is there a future for a statewide reading study?

Professional Development:  Lisa Brookover& Sandee Crowthers, Team Leaders

  • Continue planning for June 12 event to create understanding of quality professional development standards and explore linkages between higher ed and school districts.

  • Discuss the Quality Professional Development presentation to Superintendent’s Council.

  • Consider professional development implications of the latest LFA document, “Beyond Islands of Excellence.”

Public Engagement:  Tom Krebs & Don Knowles, Team Leaders

  • Review draft brochure about KLFA.

  •  Review document related to formation of a non-profit KLFA Foundation to handle fiscal responsibilities.    

  • Consider website updates for June and July.

12:00 - Reports From Workgroups:  Each workgroup will have 20 minutes to report

  • Where are you in your work? (Present status)

  • Where do you want to go with your work?  (Future Impact)

  • What are your next steps in making this happen?  (Next steps)

1:00 - LFA Survey

Tom Krebs will review results from a survey of our membership by the national Learning First Alliance.  

1:15 - Proposed KLFA Goals for the 2003-04 School Year

Based on input from members at our March meeting and the results of the LFA survey of Kansas members, Tom Krebs will propose some goals for our work next year.  He will ask member organizations to discuss them and be ready to approve them at the August meeting.  He will also announce some changes to workgroup leadership for next year.
